She filed a lawsuit against the Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA) alleging the racial hostility she experienced on staff - including being tied to a long-running fundraiser referred to internally as "the monkey auction" - forced her resignation. That experience, and the firebombing and vandalism that later targeted Black Coffee Northwest, deepened her resolve to build safe, welcoming spaces and to do this work out loud.
